THE PRAGUE ZOO

If you’re travelling to the Czech capital with children, you shouldn’t miss the Prague Zoo. It is one of the most beautiful zoos in the world, housing around 700 species of animals and covering 10 km of exotic territory. Since there is also a Bororo climbing park, an observation tower, a paddling pool, a fun train and a petting zoo on the grounds, children can really let off steam here.

BY CABLE CAR TO THE TOP OF PETŘÍN MOUNTAIN
Park area with attractions for children

A day trip full of fun awaits you when you set off for Petřín (Laurenziberg). This small mountain is a popular recreational area for the people of Prague and a dream for visitors when the weather is fine. To get to the top, you can take the cable car. The ride takes just a few minutes and if you already have a standard tram or metro ticket, you do not need to buy an extra ticket. Once at the top, you will find a large park that invites you to take a stroll and offers a number of attractions for children. The first of these is the famous Petřín lookout tower, which is reminiscent of the landmark in Paris and is also known as the Little Eiffel Tower. If you decide to climb the 299 steps to the top with your children, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city on a clear day.

The mirror maze next to the lookout tower is also a real attraction for children and adults. What looks like a small castle from the outside contains a maze of mirrors and the “Hall of Laughter”, which transforms visitors into squashed dwarves and long beanstalks when they look into the distorting mirrors.

Another attraction on Petřín is the Štefánik Observatory, an observatory with an astronomical exhibition known for its public observations of the firmament. Two of the four observation platforms are open to visitors, offering views of the sun during the day and the moon and various planets (depending on the constellation) at night.

MUSEUMS AND WATER PARKS IN PRAGUE
Bad weather activities for children

No matter how well you plan your holiday, you cannot control the weather. It’s worth having a Plan B in case the weather doesn’t cooperate. With the right preparation, you will be well prepared for your trip and can look forward to your days off in complete relaxation. Why not visit a museum or a swimming pool, for example? Prague has some great places to visit that are especially interesting and worth seeing for children.

  • The Toy Museum in Prague Castle houses a large collection of toys and games from ancient Greece to the present day. In addition to traditional Czech toys, the exhibition also includes a Barbie collection and the oldest Märklin model railway.
  • The Chocolate Museum on the Old Town Square is an experience for sweet-toothes of all ages. The tour tells the story of chocolate in words, pictures and tastes, and provides information about its production and countries of origin. A chocolate and praline tasting is included in the ticket price.
  • The Museum of the Senses in Prague’s city centre encourages interaction. More than 50 exhibits and optical illusions take visitors on a journey, engaging all their senses and encouraging them to discover and participate.
  • The Aquapalace Prague, the largest of its kind in Central Europe, is an exciting sports and leisure complex with waterslides and adventure pools for the whole family. While the little ones splash around in the water, parents can relax in the sauna and spa area.
  • If you are looking for something a little more simple, Aquacentrum Šutka is the place for you. The facility is also suitable for young children, and it offers a choice of slides and pools.
Playgrounds in Prague

Playgrounds in Prague

If you are going on a city trip with children, it is a good idea to familiarise yourself with the various playgrounds in the area. Fortunately, this is not difficult in Prague – there is a wide selection of children’s playgrounds, which are perfect for a break during your tour. Your children will thank you for it and you yourself can take a little breather and plan your next destination in peace.

If you’re out and about in Prague’s Old Town, near Wenceslas Square, be sure to stop by the playground in the Franciscan Garden. Its entrance is a little hidden in a corner of Jungmannplatz, but once you’ve found it, there’s a small, lovely children’s playground to keep your little ones occupied for a while. As the playground is set in an idyllic natural oasis, the view is also well worth seeing for adults.

Since the Charles Bridge is not to be missed when visiting Prague, the playground in Kampa Park, located right next to the bridge, is a must-see for families. To get there, cross the Charles Bridge and walk along the Lesser Town. Turn right towards the Vltava River.

The children’s island Dětský ostrov was created especially for children and is a unique attraction in Prague. It’s located on an island in the Vltava River, which can only be reached by bridge or boat. It features many sports facilities for all ages and a large playground with any type of equipment a child’s heart could desire.
