Construction time on the rails

Upcoming line closure between Regensburg and Schwandorf

Throughout the summer and autumn, there will be several track closures by DB InfraGO due to extensive renovation work on the approximately 87-kilometer-long railway line between Regensburg and Weiden. This involves the renewal of tracks, switches, and level crossings. The work will be carried out in stages, requiring multiple closures.

The first construction phase affects the stretch between Regensburg and Schwandorf. From June 15 to approximately August 22, the so-called superstructure – including tracks, ties, ballast, switches, and level crossings – will be thoroughly modernized.

The second construction phase concerns the section between Weiden and Hof. Construction work will also take place here from June 16 until approximately July 15. During this period, the route will be single-tracked only, which will lead to restrictions in train services. Additional construction work may occur simultaneously on other sections of the route.

Following this, further work will take place: from August 23 to September 14, the section between Irrenlohe and Weiden will be renovated, followed by the stretch between Schwandorf and Schwarzenfeld from September 26 to October 10. Finally, from October 10 to 31, DB InfraGO will renew the switches at Regensburg Central Station towards the Wallhallastraße operations depot.

To ensure you can still reach your destination, we will keep you updated here with the latest information about the affected routes, the duration of the construction, and the replacement services as soon as we have detailed information available.

How the replacement buses operate

During the construction period, two bus lines will replace train services — easily recognizable by color and schedule:

Express Buses (red-marked in the replacement timetable) – Fast and direct

  • Run without intermediate stops
  • Depart from Schwandorf to Regensburg: hourly at :20 and :55
  • Return from Regensburg to Schwandorf: hourly at :17 and :50

All-Stop Buses (green-marked in the replacement timetable) – For all intermediate stops

  • Serve all stations along the route, such as Maxhütte-Haidhof and Regenstauf
  • Depart from Schwandorf: hourly at :05 and :45
  • Depart from Regensburg: hourly at :00 and :40

These departure times apply throughout the day. Only in the early morning and late evening there are slight adjustments to better coordinate with train connections.

All tickets are valid on the replacement buses at no extra charge.

Transfer times

The transfer times from trains to the replacement buses are approximately 5 to 10 minutes. But don’t worry: if you happen to miss your connecting bus, the next one will depart no later than 30 minutes later.

You can find detailed information about the replacement bus (EV) stop at your station in the station database provided by Bahnland Bayern.

Capacity

The express buses are usually modern long-distance coaches with around 65 seats. During peak times (e.g., in the morning), up to 3 buses may run simultaneously — providing approximately 180–200 seats.

The all-stop buses run with fewer vehicles (1–2 buses), but additional buses are deployed during periods of high passenger volume (e.g., school hours).

Accessibility

We recommend that travelers using a wheelchair or stroller register in advance before their planned trip, as not every replacement bus is barrier-free.

Your request will be reviewed by the customer service center and forwarded to the bus company. Please use the provided Online Form of the Mobility Center for this purpose.

To minimize the risk of delays, we have developed a replacement concept in collaboration with DB Regio. As part of this, some DLB (alex/Oberpfalzbahn) trains have been replaced by DB Regio trains at certain times, and vice versa. These trains are highlighted in yellow in the replacement timetable for better clarity.

Direct Buses to the State Garden Show in Furth im Wald

During the closure of the railway line, additional direct buses will run between Regensburg main station and the site of the State Garden Show in Furth im Wald (Bus Stop Kötztingerstraße). This non-stop bus service complements the regular replacement transport. All tickets are valid on the direct buses at no extra charge.

Departures from Regensburg will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and from the State Garden Show between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. To make it easier especially for school classes to visit the State Garden Show using public transport, express buses will also run from Monday to Thursday in July, with three trips per day and direction. You can find all scheduled departure times in the timetable PDF below.
