Our fleet

Those who have been travelling with alex for a while may still remember its original name: the Allgäu-Express. From 2003 to 2007 it ran as a connection between the Allgäu and Munich – then as now operated by Regentalbahn. Since 2007, a lot has changed in our network.

Today, five powerful electric locomotives and nine robust diesel locomotives carry our passengers from Munich to Hof and Prague. Curious about what’s inside these machines? Time to take a closer look.

1.9 million train-km per year
14 locomotives & 43 passenger coaches
In operation since 2007

A quick look at our passenger coaches

Our five Taurus BR 182 locomotives are true powerhouses of steel and technology. Each locomotive is 19.28 meters long, weighs 85 tons, and is packed with high-tech that channels thousands of horsepower onto the tracks.

When no overhead line is available, our Siemens ER 20 steps in. At 80 tons, it’s slightly lighter than its electric sister, but just as powerful. Its diesel engine allows it to operate independently of the electrical grid – ideal for non-electrified routes.

Most trains run in the classic alex design – but occasionally they become real eye-catchers. Whether an anniversary, partnership, or special theme, our special liveries tell little stories on the rails.

Photo contest for real alex fans

See alex in sunshine or fog, at the station or on the move: we want to see alex through the eyes of our passengers. That’s why we always welcome photos! So don’t wait, spot alex, take a photo, and submit it by 31.03.2026. The best pictures will be featured here and on our social media channels.

The winner will receive two Prague-special tickets and, of course, some goodies from alex. You decide which photo wins – so show us your best snapshot and secure your chance to win.

At our Schwandorf workshop, our trains get the care they deserve. On four tracks with three roof workstations, we service not only alex and oberpfalzbahn trains but also vehicles from other companies. Our outdoor washing facility ensures trains leave maintenance sparkling and ready for their next journey.
